How to Buy an Engagement Ring
An engagement ring plays a great role in an engagement proposal. It is as if without the ring, there is no proposal. The ring can be made from anything, but it often has a diamond on it. Although any gemstones will work, diamond is still the most special option for an engagement ring. If you want to use a diamond ring to propose to your fiancée, you have to be ready to make a large expense. Diamond is one of the most expensive stones in the United States.
It is important for you to know that not all diamonds are the same. Even two diamonds that look identical are not the same if you present them before an expert. For ordinary people, three aspects of the diamond, namely shape, size and price, become the determining factors for the diamond’s value. For experts, there are four factors that determine the value of diamond, namely cut, clarity, color, and carat weight. Those four factors are often abbreviated to 4Cs. The Gemological Institute of America is a nonprofit organization that has set and maintained standards used to evaluate those four aspects of a diamond.
The cut of a diamond determines how perfectly a diamond transmits light and how intensely it sparkles. The better it transmits light and the more intensely it sparkles, the more valuable it is. There are fiver recognized cut grades for a diamond, namely excellent cut, very good cut, good cut, fair cut, and poor cut.
The clarity of a diamond determines how pure a diamond is from internal inclusions or external blemishes. The purer it is, the more valuable it is. The GIA has set 11 clarity grades for diamond, namely flawless, internally flawless, very very slightly included (VVS1 and VVS2), very slightly included (VS1 and VS2), slightly included (SI1 and SI2), and included (I1, I2, and I3).
The color of a diamond determines how colorless a diamond is. The more colorless it is, the more valuable it is. GIA has set 23 color grades for diamond represented by alphabetical letters from D to Z, namely, colorless (D-F), near colorless (G-J), faint (K-M), very light (N-R), light (S-Z).
Besides those four definite factors, the place where you buy the diamond often affects its price. If you buy your diamond engagement ring from a jewelry store with big name, you may see significantly more expensive price tags, but if you try to locate a wholesale diamond jewelry seller, you may enjoy a big cut. Bear in mind, though, that wholesale sellers are often more difficult to locate because they don’t do extensive promotional campaigns just like retailers do. They normally sell their products to retailers, but they can also serve you if you can find them. The easiest way to locate them is by leafing through your Yellow Pages.
