How to make perfect heart necklaces with your pre-school child

Heart necklaces are traditional gifts given to the one you love. A simple description of a heart necklace is that it is a small heart shape that is connected to a necklace of some sort. Depending on your budget and adventure, it is possible to buy the most beautiful heart necklaces, draped in rubies with the highest quality gold chain. However, for this article we’re going to provide you with some ideas on how to make hear necklaces. Since we were young, it was tradition that our Grandmother would help my sister and I make a heart necklace, this was to be given to our mother on Valentine’s day. Even now, many years later and as the man of the house, I have tried to continue this tradition with my young daughter. It’s good fun, it’s bought us closer together and my wife enjoys the “surprise” every year. I really hope you give it a try.

Don’t worry, you do not have to be an arts and crafts expert to make heart necklaces. Personally, I am all fingers and thumbs and lack any sort of imagination when it comes to making things, that’s why the most important thing is to keep it simple. My daughter is pre-school age, so it is more about the process of making the heart necklaces and the opportunity to talk to her about giving a gift and making someone happy. Obviously, it is also important to consider the safety aspect, so I make sure all of the materials are suitable for one so young.

For our basic heart necklace we use the following materials. Depending on how adventurous you feel, you can add or replace certain parts as you please.

Lots of colored paper
Small set of children’s scissors. Remember, we want to encourage our child to make as much of the heart necklace as possible
Some type of water based paint
Children’s glue
Some colored wool or other colored string material
Glitter

As you can see from the above, it is reasonably simple. All of the materials can be found in a good arts and craft stores. You may also find other materials that might inspire you to make even better heart necklaces than we do.

The first step is to create a heart shape from your colored paper. We make this about the same size as the bottom of a coffee mug, however you can choose larger or smaller. We then cut smaller pieces of colored paper and stick them randomly on the heart shape, we also pour glitter onto it.

Once we’re happy with our heart shape, we create a small hole towards the top. This is where the necklace part will be. You could simply thread through a piece of wool to create the desired affect, however we like to plait together three different colored wools before completing the necklace.

There you have it, heart necklaces that can be made by pre-schools. Of course, the more imaginative you are the greater your heart necklaces will be. This year, we’re hoping to make a nice box and perhaps include a photograph on the heart shape.
